Section 3 — Control Surface Description

Luminance Key

The

Lum

button selects a Luminance key. The

Gain/Clip Hi

and

Clip/Clip Lo

knobs provide a full range control of clip and gain.

Key Source Button Group

The

Matte Fill

and

Video Key

buttons in the DSK Keyers subpanel determine

the source of the key cut and key fill for each key as explained below.

Matte Fill Button

The

Matte Fill

button determines what signal will be used as the key fill by

the keyer. When off, the key fill signal currently selected on the fill bus will
be used. When on, a matte signal will be used. Selecting the

Matte Fill

button

automatically delegates the Matte menu in the Menu panel. Matte adjust-
ments can only be made through this menu. Refer to

Matte Menus on

page 292.

Video Key Button

The

Video Key

button determines what signal the keyer will use to cut the

hole in the background. When off, the key signal (if defined) of the source
selected on the cut bus will be used (the normal setting for a Linear key).
When on, the video signal of the selected source will be used (the normal
setting for a luminance key).

Note

Video Key is generally used only when the source's key signal is not appro-
priate. This would be the case for a character generator producing a wide key
(for a border or shadow) which the operator decides to matte fill. In this case,
the video signal defines the character area and usually produces a better
result.

Key Invert Button

The

Key Invert

button reverses the polarity of the key control signal. When

Key Invert

is active (button lit), black areas of the key cut signal cause replace-

ment of the background, and the white key cut areas cause the background
to be retained.

Show Key Button

The

Show Key

button is used for viewing the key control signal. This button

does not affect the Program output. Holding down this button displays the
black and white key control signal of the currently delegated keyer on that
M/E’s preview output. The results of any clipping and masking will be
shown.
