The connector shell is wired to Pin 2 of the MIDI OUT connector. Not the non-consecutive pin
numbering of the DIN MIDI connector.

Ethernet Jack

This is an RJ-45 jack used for connecting to a 100BaseT Ethernet network. Appendix D gives details
on using the Ethernet connection. We don’t recommend making your own Ethernet cables (unless
you’re experienced at it, in which case you probably don’t need to read this paragraph) since it
requires a special crimping tool that is rather expensive. Cheap crimping tools often make
troublesome cables.

Once again we’ll remind you that when directly connecting two recorders on the MDS Network, or
when connecting a recorder directly to the network interface card in a computer you need to use a
crossover Ethernet cable. When connecting recorders and the computer to a switch, hub, or router,
you need “straight through” cables. An RJ-45 plug is transparent so you can see the colors of the
wires by looking at the plug. A straight cable will be wired with the same color wires to the same
pins on each end. A crossover cable will be wired differently. Here’s how to tell them apart so you
can be sure you’re using the correct type of cable:
