Sending an instant message to a buddy

1. Expand the IM Session, Buddy list, History or Search panes.

2. Highlight a name or log entry.

3. Select Menu, Send IM.

Note:

This menu item is not available if you and your buddy are not on the same Avaya 3100 Mobile

Communicator Gateway.

The IM Sessions pane appears; presence information appears if it is available.

4. On the IM Sessions pane, do one of the following:

— Type your message in the Send IM Messages field. Limit the message to a maximum of 160

characters.

— Select Menu, Canned Messages, <custom message>.

5. Select Menu, Send.

A copy of the message is stored on the IM Sessions pane.

Sending an instant message to a SIP address

Start an instant messaging session with another Avaya 3100 MC - Client user with a SIP address.

1. Expand the IM Sessions pane.

2. Select Menu, New IM Session.

3. In the New IM Session pane, enter a valid SIP address using the format:

<username>@<domain>

4. Select Done.

5. In the Send IM Message pane, do one of the following:

— Type your message in the Send IM Message field. Limit the message to a maximum of 160

characters.

— Select Menu, Canned Messages, <custom message>.

6. Select Menu, Send.

A copy of the message is stored on the IM Sessions pane.

Receiving an instant message

When you log on, you receive instant messages regardless of what you are currently doing on the mobile
device. When you receive an instant message, you are alerted by an audible tone and a visual alert.

The audible tone is controlled by the device. To select a new tone, disable the tone, or use vibrate
mode in place of the tone, refer to your device documentation.

The visual alert is controlled by the Avaya 3100 MC - Client New IM Alert parameter. For more
