- Setting the “Crank Reference” for Coil-on-Plug Engines (not distributor based engines)

Crank Reference (deg)

A good “Crank Reference starting point value, by engine type is as follows:

 GM LSx and Chrysler Hemi engines: 350

 Ford Mod Motors: 329.


Start by inputting the Crank Reference starting point value from above into the COP “Crank
Reference” cell (see screen print below). With the engine RPM above 2,500 RPM, use a timing light
to confirm that the spark advance value displayed in the “Dash” window (see below) exactly matches
the value shown on the crank dampener. If they do not match, change the value (move the number up
or down) in the “Crank Reference” cell until the value in the “Dash” window exactly matches the
crank value (on the dampener) you see with the timing light.













Crankshaft Pulses/rev for
COP Engines
For the LS1 COP engine the
value must be 24. For the
LS2 and LS7 COP engines,
the value must be 60. The
Ford Mod Motor COP
engine the value must be 36.

COP

Crank Reference” window (for

coil-on-plug applications only) in the
BigComm “Operating Parameter
Configuration” Window. Start with
350 – 360 for LSx & Hemi engines and
329 for the Ford Mod Motor.
