INSTALLATION

10 Easy Steps to Steam Sound

Installing the DSD generally requires the following steps:

1. Select the Locomotive

Choose a locomotive appropriate to the decoder and your installation skills.

2. Plan the Installation

Determine the location of the DSD, speaker, cam, lamps and connectors.

3. Isolate the Motor

Disassemble the locomotive and disconnect all wires to the motor and lights.

4. Fit the Speaker

Trim the speaker frame and/or add baffles to get a sound-tight fit.

5. Modify the Tender Body and Floor

Modify the tender to accept the speaker and decoder.

6. Install the Lamps

Modify headlight castings to accept miniature lamps.

7. Install the Exhaust Cam

Install sycnronizer disk and mount cam switch.

8. Install and Wire the Decoder

Mount the decoder and connect the lamps, motor, speaker, etc.

9. Test the Installation

10. Program the CVs

Program CVs to tune performance and sound effects.

Tools and Materials You Will Need
In addition to the common hand tools found on most modeler’s workbenches, you should have at your disposal:

Low wattage (under 25 watts!) soldering iron
Rosin Core Solder
X-acto knife
Miniature screwdriver set
Diagonal cutters
High speed motor tool (such as a Dremel)
Ohmmeter
Double sided tape
Silicone RTV

We also recommend the following items to ease your installation:

Micro-connectors to facilitate easy separation of items like speakers from the locomotive. Throttle Up! sells P.N.

pin microconnector and P.N. 810058, 10-pack of micro-mini connector pins.
