data.

Information entered into or used

by a computer.

data bits.

The number of data bits sent

in each transmission frame using the
serial interface.

default.

A value, parameter, or

attribute that the printer uses when
none is specified.

document-on-demand.

Your printer’s

capability to automatically move
paper from the print line to the tear off
bar upon completion of a print job.

dot-matrix printer.

A printer that forms

characters by a pattern of dots.

dots-per-inch (dpi)

. The number of dots

printed within an inch horizontally
across the page.

double-high printing.

Printing in

which the characters are twice as high
as the default characters.

double-strike.

Characters are printed

twice on the same page location.

double-wide printing.

Printing in which

the characters are twice as wide as the
default characters. This results in half
as many characters per inch.

draft-print (DP).

A style of print used

for draft material. Compare with letter
quality.

DTR protocol.

Hardware handshaking

protocol for RS-232 serial interface.

emphasized print type.

A print type in

which characters are made bolder.

font.

A set of type of a given size and

style.

forms length.

Also known as page

length, this is the length of a page. It
can be set from one line to a maximum
of 22 inches.

interface.

Defines the method of

communication between the printer
and the terminal or computer. The two
common types of interface are parallel

A type style with characters that

bytes of storage. Equal to 1024 bytes.
