ACK

acknowledge—handshaking signal driven by the 653X device, indicating
that it is ready to transfer data

Application Programming Interface—a standardized set of subroutines or
functions along with the parameters that a program can call

asynchronous

For hardware, it is a property of an event that occurs at an arbitrary time,
without synchronization to a reference clock. In software, it is the property
of a function that begins an operation and returns prior to the completion or
termination of the operation.
