2.1
Projector

The standard D-73d projector, shown Figure 2-2, consists of two discrete LED optical
engines stacked one on top of the other to provide either three-dimensional (3D) or
two-dimensional (2D) content.

For 3D content, each engine produces the image for one eye. Linear polarizers on each
engine isolate the output images from one another. When the viewer transitions from 2D
content to 3D content, the polarizers move in tandem into the optical path by means of a
mechanical actuator (similar to a motorized anamorphic lens transport).

The left-eye and right-eye images are reflected by the screen back toward the viewing
area and kept isolated by a second set of polarizing filters: the 3D glasses worn by the
viewer.

For 2D content, the projector superimposes the output from one engine onto that from the
other engine to produce an extremely bright and focused image. When viewing 2D
content, the polarizers are out of the optical path.

The “left-eye” optical engine (the one nearest the glass) receives an HDMI video signal
from the Primary DHD Controller. The “right-eye” optical engine (the one nearest the feet)
receives an HDMI video signal from the Secondary DHD Controller.
