3 Preparing for Virtual LVI/LUN and Volume Shredder

Operations

This chapter describes the environment that you need to prepare in order to operate VLL and Volume
Shredder.

System Requirements

To operate Virtual LVI/LUN or Volume Shredder, you need the following items:

HP storage system

Remote Web Console computer

Open Volume Management, Virtual LVI/LUN, and/or Volume Shredder software

To use various option feature, you will need to obtain any or all of the following items:

Virtual LUN feature: Obtain Open Volume Management, exclusively for open systems.

Virtual LVI feature: Obtain Virtual LVI, exclusively for mainframe systems.

Shredding feature: Obtain Volume Shredder. This software can be used for open and
mainframe systems. For more information, see

“Preparing to Use Volume Shredder” (page 23)

Quick Format feature: A system disk is needed for your storage system. For more information,
see

“Overview of Quick Formatting” (page 20)

and

“ Quick Formatting the LDEVs” (page 82)

.

Preparing to Use Virtual LVI/LUN

Before starting a VLL operation on a selected storage system, make sure that the desired mainframe
volumes are disconnected from the host, and/or remove the LU paths to the open system volumes.

Preparing to Use Volume Shredder

Before the shredding operation, you must make sure the status of the target volume is Blocked.

If you change the status of a volume to Blocked, I/O operations will not be performed on the
volume. By specifying write permission, you can limit which users are allowed to perform this
operation. For details on how to specify write permission, see the HP StorageWorks

Make sure that Remote Web Console is in Modify mode.

Launch VLL, and display the Customized Volume window (see

“Launching Virtual LVI/LUN”

(page 69)

).

In the table on the right side of the Customized Volume window, find the target volume, and
then check the Status column of the table to see the status of the volume.

If the Status column shows Blocked, the target volume is already blocked.

If the Status column does not show Blocked, the target volume is not blocked. Take the
following steps to make sure that the target volume is blocked.
