Re-creating the CVs After Initializing the VDEV (Make Volume Operation)

WARNING!

The Make Volume function is a destructive operation. The data on the Virtual LVI/LUN

volume being converted is lost when the operation is complete. The user is responsible for backing
up the data as needed before performing this operation.

The Make Volume operation deletes all volumes in a VDEV and creates new variable-sized volumes
(CVs). If necessary, you can create system disks by performing the Install CV operations (see

“Creating System Disks” (page 84)

).

When performing Make Volume operations, you can create CVs in the following ways (see

Table 19 (page 76)

).

Table 19 Settings for the Make Volume Operation

VLL volume to be created

Setting

No.

A VLL volume that has the specified number of CVs of
the specified capacity is created. This is the same as
the Install CV operation.

Specify the capacity and the number of
variable-sized volumes (CVs) under a VLL volume.

1

A VLL volume that has the specified number of CVs is
created (the VDEV is divided by the specified number).

Specify the number of variable-sized volumes (CVs).

2

A VLL volume that has CVs of the specified capacity
is created (the VDEV is divided by the specified
capacity).

Specify the capacity of a variable-sized volume (CV).

3

If some space remains in the VDEV after VLL volumes
are created by the settings 1 through 3, that remaining
space can also be converted into a VLL volume.

Specify the remaining capacity for a VLL volume.

CAUTION:

An error message may display if a Volume Initialize operation and a Make Volume

operation are performed concurrently. The part code of this error message is 0003, and the error
number of this error message is 1041. If this message appears, ensure that these operations are
performed separately.

The following lists the restrictions on CVs for the Make Volume function. If the VDEV contains a CV
that violates any of the restrictions, the Make Volume function is disabled. You must eliminate
invalid CVs before executing the Make Volume function.

The CV must not be path-defined (including TrueCopy for Mainframe, XP Continuous Access,
ShadowImage for Mainframe, XP Business Copy, and XP Continuous Access Journal pair
volumes).

The CV must not be reserved for XP Auto LUN. For more information on XP Auto LUN, see the
HP StorageWorks XP24000/XP20000 Auto LUN Software User Guide.

LUSE volumes concatenated with one or more LDEVs belonging to a different VDEV must not
exist.

The CV must be read/write-enabled.

The CV must not be a pool volume (pool-VOL).

The CV must not be a journal volume.

The CV must not be a remote command device.

The CV must not be a volume used by Volume Security.

The CV must not be a quorum system disk.
