Register journal volumes in a journal
You set up journal volumes by registering them in a journal. The procedure is provided below.
Prerequisite information
•
A journal volume may be either a 3390 emulation volume (except for data exchange emulations
and 3390-A) or it may be an OPEN-V emulation. The number of volumes registered does not
have the same between the primary and secondary storage systems. However, the emulation
of the journal volumes in the primary and secondary storage system be the same when the
journals are paired. If the volumes in the primary storage system are 3390 emulation, then
the journal volumes in the paired journal group in teh secondary storage system must also be
3390 emulation.

Journal volumes must be registered in a journal before the initial pair-copy operation is
performed.
•
Prior to registering journals, set up primary and secondary EXCTGs, if necessary. See “Using
extended consistency groups” (page 47) .
•
Journal volumes must be registered on both local and remote systems.
•
A journal can contain up to 64 journal volumes.
•
Journal volumes must be set up and sized according to your Continuous Access Journal system’s
requirements. For more information, see
“Sizing journal volumes” (page 24) .
•
Journal volumes can be added to a journal under the following conditions:
The journal is not used. ◦
◦ When pair operations are not in progress and the status of the journal of the mirror is
Active, Stopped, Hold, Holding, or Hold(Failure).

Journal volumes cannot be added to a journal under the following conditions:
When pair operations are in progress and the status of the journal of the mirror is Active,
Stopped, Hold, Holding, or Hold(Failure). ◦
◦ When Cache Residency settings are defined for the volumes.
•
Do not register a journal volume during quick formatting. Doing so stalls quick formatting
operation.
•
Data volumes and journal volumes that belong to different LDKC cannot coexist in a journal.
