Introduction
1.1 General Description
The PROTEAN 2-D Spot Cutter System is a precision piece of equipment for the
accurate location, excision and loading into micrometer plates (MTP) of protein spots after
separation on 2-D electrophoresis gels or PVDF membranes. The system has been designed
to be both robust in construction and simple to operate.
1.2 Operation
Before using the system, please take a few minutes to read this manual. As delivered, the
minimum requirement is to plug in the computer, load in the software and related peripherals
and turn on the system, as instructed in this manual.
1.3 Caution
It is detrimental to the system to leave the lighting on for more than 10 minutes at a time
as it may lead to permanent damage of sections of the system.
1.4 Moving The Spot Cutter
The System should be moved:
• In the upright position.
• By lifting and carrying from the base.
• By placing down in the upright position on a stable surface.
Important Note: The system must not be moved by lifting the system up by the camera arm.

Communication ports: 2 serial ports are required
2 Mb Video RAM

1.6 Cutting Excision Sizes
Tip Size: Inside Diameter is 1 mm
Outside Diameter is 1.5 mm
Maximum cutting area: 11.8 x 8.8 cm
Gel Sizers and Frames provided: Large Gel Sizer 11.8 x 8.8 cm
Mini Gel Size: 9.5 x 7 cm
1.7 Power Setting
Power can either be 120 V or 240 V (50 Hz/60 Hz)
Verify that you are using the correct power voltage by inspecting the voltage setting
indicator and the rating on the fuse installed in the system. (see Appendix C)
