Solving Problems
Battery Problems
CAUTION:
There is a danger of a new battery exploding if it is incorrectly
installed. Replace the battery only with the same or equivalent type recommended
by the manufacturer. Discard used batteries according to the manufacturer's
instructions.

R EPLACE THE BATTERY — If you have to repeatedly reset time and date information
after turning on the computer, or if an incorrect time or date displays during start-up,
replace the battery (see the instructions that came with your computer). If the battery
still does not work properly, contact Dell (see "Contacting Dell" on page 337).

E NSURE THAT M ICROSOFT® W INDOWS® R ECOGNIZES THE DRIVE —

• Click Start → and click Computer.
If the drive is not listed, see your Service Manual or contact Dell (see "Contacting
Dell" on page 337).

• Click Start → and click My Computer.
T EST THE DRIVE —
• Insert another disc to eliminate the possibility that the original drive is defective.
C LEAN THE DRIVE OR DISK — See "Maintenance Tasks (Enhance Performance and
Ensure Security)" on page 125.
C HECK THE CABLE CONNECTIONS
F OR DRIVES WITH SPINDLES AND / OR TRAYS , E NSURE THAT THE MEDIA IS SNAPPED
ONTO THE SPINDLE
