5.2 Pump lubricants

Determine the mode of lubrication of the pump set,

e.g. grease or oil lubrication.

For oil lubricated pumps, fill the

bearing housing with correct grade of oil to the

correct level, check sight glass.

Oil quantities are provided in section 5.2.5.2. Grease

lubricated pumps and electric motors are supplied

pre-greased. See section

5.2.6.2 for approximate

grease filling quantities information. Other drivers

and gearboxes, if appropriate, should be lubricated in

accordance with their User Instructions.

5.2.1 Bearings-oil lubricated

MF pumps can be furnished with oil lubricated

bearings at the customers request. However,

although the oil and grease lubricated bearing frames

are physically interchangeable in whole, individual

parts may or may not be interchangeable. Check

with the nearest Flowserve Sales Representative to

determine inter-changeability of the parts.

5.2.1.1 Constant level oiler for frames 3A,4A & 5A

For 3A, 4A and 5A frame MF pumps externally

mounted constant level oiler is used. The rotating oil

slingers coat the inside of the bearing housing with oil

droplets. No special oil level adjustment is necessary

in this type of oiling system. The constant level oiler

maintains the oil level automatically.

VENT CAP

OIL SLINGER

CONSTANT LEVEL

OILER

Oil circulation and lubrication is achieved by the

bearing rollers pumping oil through the bearings

towards the covers. During operation, a level drop of

up to 6 mm (0.25 in.) can occur due to this bearing

pumping action. If oil is added during operation, do

not adjust to the static oil level as this over-oiling may

cause the bearing end cover seals to leak.

5.2.1.2 Filling the constant level oiler

Unscrew the bottle from the oiler, then fill with the

recommended oil. Allow the oil to flow until the oil

level in the bottle reaches and maintains constant

level. Make sure the bottle is in the lowest position

while filling so that the correct amount of oil enters

the housing cavity. It will be necessary to refill the

bottle several times.

Do not fill through the air vent opening

on the top of the bearing frame. Do not overfill the

reservoir to avoid overheating of bearings.

Before starting the pump, check the

bearing frame oil level and add oil to the bearing

frame as necessary. Refer to the table in sec 5.2.5.2

for the correct bearing frame oil level. Assuming that

the oil level in the bearing frame is properly

maintained and contamination is minimal.

Oil lubricated anti-friction bearings are

factory lubricated to prevent rusting for a short period

of time only. Immediately upon receiving equipment,

fill the oil reservoir to the proper level with the proper

lubricant. If the units are to be stored longer than six

months, fill the bearing frame cavity with a good

quality R&O oil capable of providing rust protection to

the parts. See section 2.4.3 for details on

Long Term

Storage

.

5.2.2 Externally mounted oil level indicator for

frame 6A and 7A pumps

Pumps are equipped with an externally mounted oil

level sight gauge and vent cap as shown in figure

.

Introduce oil into the bearing frame by removing the

vent and fill the bearing housing to the level as given

in Table 5.2.5.2. The oil level measured from the

centerline of the shaft. See detail in section

5.2.2.1below. After filling with oil, mark the correct

static oil level on the sight glass, and maintain this

level to within ±3 mm (±0.125 in.).
