Truncation

Decreasing the length of the bars in a barcode symbol below the normal specification.
Truncation decreases a symbol’s omni-directional readability and should be avoided.


Valley

The graphical pattern on a scan reflectance profile which looks like a “U” or “V.” With-
in a profile a valley represents a bar. One or more valleys could also be found within an
element representing a reflectance change within an element.


Vertical Redundancy

The availability of more than one scan path through a barcode symbol.


Visual Measurement

Measurements obtained by using human vision in the determination of characteristics of
the barcode symbol.


Void

White or light reflective area in a bar caused by a printing error that can cause a bar to
scan as a space.

Wide/Narrow Ratio

Ratio of narrow to wide elements.


X Dimension

The intended width of the narrow elements dictated by the application and/or symbology
specification.


Zero Suppression

Technique used to shorten UPC symbols by omitting zeros from the barcode.
