Server Blade Configuration and Utilities

ProLiant Power Governor

The ProLiant Power Governor utility, which is located under the Advanced Option
menu in the ROM-Based Setup Utility (RBSU), provides users with multiple options
for managing power usage of servers. The options supported are Full Performance,
Power Savings Mode, and Dynamic Power Savings Mode.

Full Performance Mode

The default operation mode of the system is Full Performance Mode. In this mode,
the system runs at its maximum performance state. This mode provides the maximum
possible performance, but results in the maximum power consumption. This mode is
useful for customers who want absolute maximum performance and whose
environment is capable of providing sufficient power to the server to run at its
maximum power mode.

Power Savings Mode

When Power Savings Mode is enabled, the system always runs in a lower mode of
performance. When this mode is enabled, the processor is programmed to run at a
lower frequency and with less voltage. When enabled, this feature guarantees lower
maximum power consumption for the server. The Power Savings Mode is useful for
customers whose environment is power constrained.

If the customer's power capabilities are increased in the future, the server can be
reconfigured to run in a higher power and performance state. Enabling this feature
may result in lower overall performance.

Dynamic Power Savings Mode

HP's Dynamic Power Savings Mode allows the system to adjust the processor's
power and performance based on the processor’s workload. When the processor is
very busy, the processor will run at its maximum performance state. However, when
the processor is not busy, it will run at a lower performance state. This allows
decreasing the average power usage of the server. The system will vary the
processor's performance, and therefore power usage, based on the system's needs.
