Replacing a journal volume in a journal

You can replace an in-use journal volume. The smoothest method is to add a backup journal volume
before it is needed. For more information on this, see

“Adding additional journal volumes to an

existing journal” (page 79)

.

Procedure 25 To replace a journal volume when a backup exists

1.

When an additional journal volume exists in a journal, delete the in-use journal volume,

2.

Resynchronize the journal.

Procedure 26 To replace a journal volume when no backup exists

1.

Delete the journal.

2.

Recover the blocked journal volume.

3.

Register a new journal volume in a journal.

4.

Recreate the pair using the new journal.

5.

Assign a THP V-VOL for the journal volume.

Deleting journal volumes from a journal

You can delete journal volumes as needed. This topic provides instructions and important information
for doing so.

Prerequisite information

A journal volume can only be deleted if either of the following conditions exist:

If the pair belonging to the mirror in the journal is suspended.

If the pair belonging to the mirror in the journal is deleted.

Deleting a journal volume from a journal in which a pair is registered results in the journal
volume's LDEVs becoming blockaded. You can release the blockade by formatting the LDEVs.

To delete a journal volume, mirror statuses in the journal must be Initial, Stopped, or Hold
(Failure). However, if a journal uses multiple mirrors, journal volumes can only be deleted as
shown below.

If all journal volumes in a journal are deleted (the journal is empty), all journal option data is
initialized. To reset the journal’s options, see

Procedure 27 To delete journal volumes

1.

In the Storage System tree, click Replication > Journals.

2.

Select the Journal Volumes tab, then select the journal containing the journal volumes to be
deleted.

3.

From the Actions menu, click Journals > Assign Journal Volumes.

4.

From the Assigned Journal Volumes table, select the volumes to be deleted and click Remove.

5.

Click Finish.
