C Configurations with Business Copy

Continuous Access Journal and Business Copy can share the same data volumes to provide multiple
copies of data, at both the local and remote sites.
This appendix provides configurations and information for using Business Copy with Continuous
Access Journal. For details about Business Copy, see the HP XP7 Business Copy User Guide.

Overview

Continuous Access Journal’s main function is to maintain a copy of the production volume in a
remote location. Backing up the primary and/or secondary Continuous Access Journal (Cnt Ac-J)
volumes with Business Copy (BC), or backing up the BC volumes with Cnt Ac-J, provides additional
advantages.

When sharing the primary volume with BC

On-site data backup is provided in case of a Cnt Ac-J failure.

Multiple copies of production data are provided on the local site for secondary purposes,
such as data analysis, testing and so on.

Sharing the BC secondary volume with the Cnt Ac-J primary volume on the local site provides
a remote copy.

When BC is cascaded on the remote side, data in the BC secondary volume can be used for
testing the Cnt Ac-J system and for recovery purposes.

The BC secondary volume is available for continuous replication during a test.

If a Cnt Ac-J problem is encountered during an actual recovery procedure, the BC
secondary volume provides a golden copy of the Cnt Ac-J secondary volume, which can
be used to restore the Cnt Ac-J secondary volume.

NOTE:

To split the BC pairs in a consistency group whose volumes are also used in Cnt Ac-J

pairs, the Cnt Ac-J pairs must be in PAIR, PSUS, or PSUE status.

Cnt Ac-J data volumes are shared with BC volumes in specific configurations. The following topics
discuss these supported configurations.

Configurations with Business Copy primary volumes

A BC primary volume can be shared with a Cnt Ac-J primary or secondary volume.

A BC primary volume shared with the Cnt Ac-J primary volume is illustrated below. This
configuration allows you to use BC for on-site data backup in case of a Cnt Ac-J failure, and
to use Cnt Ac-J to provide remote backup of the BC primary volume in case of a BC failure.
