Processing & DB Creation

A scheduled Collector process runs 24*7 and reads the various event logs and creates the hourly,
daily and monthly detail entries as well as records action event statistics. The Collector process is a
NonStop process (i.e. check-pointed) that can be set to run as a low priority background process.
The Collector runs once daily at the time you choose, scanning the logs for the entire previous day
and populates the databases by reading events and incrementing the appropriate counters. At the
end of the daily run, the hourly detail data is rolled over into the summary files (Daily, Monthly). The
Collector process inserts the entries into the DB by Owner/Subsystem. An additional set of tables is
maintained to hold the counts per event number. The Collector process also maintains action event
information for the day, as well as statistics on action response times. In addition, the Collector has
the logic to handle the generation of Hourly Alerts using the EA Alert Thresholds values. This
process is also responsible for purging expired data based on user defined retention parameters.
Program Name: EA Collector (EACOLL)

Presentation

The system provides a browser based (supports Internet Explorer) Graphical User Interface (GUI)
that allows instantaneous presentation of historical data and graphs showing trends and particular
activity views. The underlying program is called EAVIEW. Since EA is a plug-in to WVP, the web
server used for the interface is shared with that of WVP.

The presentation layer provides a display grid (calendar concept) reflecting what data is available
for review and allows the user to select particular data views on both summary and detail levels. EA
starts with a yearly view, showing the event count summarized for each day of the year. Breakdown
based on event type can be seen by rolling the cursor over the cell. Clicking on a day cell shows
more options for further drilling down on the day. A similar drilldown menu shows upon clicking the
month cell to the left hand side of the grid. Data can be drilled down to event details showing the
token dump and the cause/effect/recovery information if present.

The UI also allows users to view action event statistics and drill down to see acknowledgement
details for each day.

A separate screen accessible from the WVP Admin menu enables modification of the various
params and configurations used within EA. This includes setting the retentions for databases,
setting what collectors to look at for events, definition of alert thresholds, definition of applications
(named combinations of one or more owner-subsystem pairs), and setting other parameters such
as daily run time, action logs storage volume and owner-subsystem exclusion list.
