NOTE:

Systems Insight Manager does not receive traps from the application using port 162

unless the application is configured to forward traps to the port assigned to Systems Insight Manager.

NOTE:

If the SnmpTrapPortAddress entry is deleted, Systems Insight Manager defaults to

port 162.

Systems Insight Manager attempts SNMP communications based on the number of SNMP retries
you specify and only stops when the communication is successful or the number of retries is
exceeded. Systems Insight Manager also waits for SNMP responses between retries based on the
timeout period. Finally, Systems Insight Manager can communicate only through SNMP when the
community string specified on the system and the community string specified for that system in
Systems Insight Manager match. The community string, "public," is a commonly used default.
However, you can specify any community string needed for your security requirements.

NOTE:

Community strings on the managed system and the Systems Insight Manager community

strings for the system must match to manage the system through SNMP. Some SNMP management
agents also provide IP address filtering. Be sure the Systems Insight Manager IP address is in the
allow list for any given SNMP agents.

The operating system of the managed system can provide additional security capabilities for SNMP
such as IP address restrictions for valid requests.

HTTP

Systems Insight Manager also takes advantage of the industry standard HTTP protocol (used to
transfer information over the World Wide Web) for transportation of management information.
Many systems support some kind of configuration "home page" that is supported over HTTP or the
secure HTTPS protocol. Systems Insight Manager attempts to find HTTPS servers running on systems
if the Global Protocol Settings page has this enabled.

WBEM

WBEM

is one of the newest management protocols. This protocol leverages the industry-standard

CIM as defined by the DMTF. Systems Insight Manager can communicate to systems directly using
the WBEM protocol or to the Windows WMI systems using the WMI Mapper Proxy. Systems Insight
Manager uses WBEM to communicate with storage system

SMI-S WBEM providers

and HP-UX

providers. HP has been leading this effort through its association with the Distributed Management
Task Force (DMTF). WBEM is an initiative supported by HP, Microsoft, Intel, BMC, Cisco, and 120
other platform, operating system, and application software suppliers.
When WBEM is enabled, the management console can obtain information from any system that
supports WBEM. For WBEM to work, you must provide the correct user name and password for
the given system. WBEM enables a larger set of server and storage manageability data to be
collected and displayed on the System Page and in reports. The presence of WBEM enables the
Properties pages and enables WBEM indications (events) to be displayed in event collections.
Without HTTPS enabled, Systems Insight Manager does not discover any WBEM-based features
on a system. Support for non-HP systems has been expanded starting with Systems Insight Manager
6.0.

NOTE:

Systems Insight Manager supports WBEM over HTTPS to ensure user supplied WBEM

name and password pairs are protected.

NOTE:

OpenWBEM is not supported.

Remote Method Invocation (RMI)

Java RMI is used within the CMS only for inter-process communication.
