ULNM with VMware ESX Server 4.0 /4.1

The Dell UPS Local Node Manager (ULNM) is the DELL solution to automate virtualized IT system

responses to power events as follows:

• Continuously monitors the incoming AC power status
• Warns administrators and users if AC power fails
• Shuts down the system before the end of battery backup power is reached
• Restarts machines when AC power restarts

VMware controls the shutdown and restart of virtual machines (VMs) directly from the administration

console, or from an application hosted on the ESX layer. The Dell ULNM is installed on the vMA

application layer and provides the following advantages:

• Only one deployment of Dell ULNM on a physical machine, to manage all VMs
• Silent and personalized deployment using the Command Line Interface (CLI) of the Dell ULNM
• Dynamic management of VM configuration, with a personalized script

NOTE:

If you are running VMware vCenter, you do not need to install Dell ULNM on each ESXi host. In this case, we offer

an agentless solution where the Dell

Multi-UPS Management Console

®

(MUMC) can manage multiple ESXi hosts

through a single vCenter connection. Refer to the Dell MUMC user’s guide for more information about this type of

installation.

See Figure 81 for a configuration diagram of a VMware architecture.
