Solution 2
In this solution, ESX and ESXi hosts not controlled by vCenter (paid version only), which provides
following features:
• Dell ULNM application is installed on VIMA/vMA for each host
• Dell ULNM configurations and actions can be managed centrally from the Dell
™
Multi-UPS
Management Console
®
client
• Some command line programming is required
• Remote graceful shutdown of multiple ESX/ESXi servers and hosted VMs
NOTE:
For paid versions, VMware suppresses the ability to control VM shutdown profiles in non-licensed ESXi
installations. There are 3rd party methodologies for avoiding this restriction, but this is not covered in this user
guide.
Solution 3
This solution is for ESX-only hosts (paid or free versions), which provides following features:
• Dell ULNM application is installed on each host (on either Windows or Linux VM)
• Remote graceful shutdown of each ESX host and hosted VMs
• Dell ULNM configurations and actions can be managed centrally from Dell MUMC client
Installation Prerequisites
This section guides you through the installation and configuration prerequisites before installing the
Dell ULNM on VMware ESX architecture.
Dell validated this procedure on an ESX Server 4.0/4.1 with a Dell ULNM and a distant administration
workstation with VMware vSphere Client 4.0.
The following prerequisites apply:
• ESX Server 3.5 is not compatible with Dell ULNM. Use the legacy Dell UPS Management Software
(DUMS).
• Through the network, Dell UPSs are compatible with Dell ULNM on ESX.
• Through RS-232, Dell UPSs are compatible with Dell ULNM on ESX.
• To allow a graceful shutdown of the VMs, you must install VMware Tools on each VM.
VMware ESX Server 4.0 Configuration Prerequisites
For automatic OS boot on start-up, you must configure the physical machine to allow automatic OS
boot on start-up. This setting is present in your machine's BIOS. For further information, see specific
technical hardware documentation.
To allow interactions between physical and virtual machines, VMware tools must be installed on each
VM. For further information, see VMware ESX Server documentation.
