This chapter describes how to remove and install hard-disk drives in Dell
PowerVault 2xxS storage systems.

The storage system includes a small computer system interface (SCSI) backplane
board that greatly simplifies cabling and configuration for SCSI hard-disk drives. The
SCSI backplane configures all SCSI ID and termination for the hard-disk drives.

When used in combination with an optional Dell PowerEdge Expandable RAID Con-
troller (PERC) 2, Dell PERC 2/DC, Dell PERC 2/SC, or Dell PERC 3/DI host adapter card
in the host computer, the SCSI backplane board allows you to remove and insert hard-
disk drives without shutting down the storage system—an invaluable feature for serv-
ers that contain important data and programs for an entire network of users. You can
replace a failed drive without forcing all users on the network to log off and lose valu-
able time and possibly data. See "Removing and Installing SCSI Hard-Disk Drives in
the Drive Bays," found later in this c
hapter, for details.

The SCSI backplane board provides termination for the SCSI bus. None of the drives
connected to the SCSI backplane board should have their termination enabled. The
SCSI backplane board sets all SCSI ID numbers for the drives.

For the PowerVault 200S and 201S, the eight drive bays' respective SCSI ID numbers
are 0, 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10, and 11 (see Figure 6-1). The drive bays support 1.6-inch or 1.0-inch
hard-disk drives.
