3.2.2.1 Spanning Tree
Ethernet bridges or switches use the Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), an algorithm to create a logical
topology to connect all network segments and ensure that only one path exists between any two
stations. This algorithm defines a tree structure of network links with only one path between any two
devices. Because this protocol spans all nodes in the network, it is called Spanning Tree.

Figure 21 shows a graphical depiction of a Spanning Tree protocol application.
