What is the physical size of the 9600?

The 9600 is fairly large and must be so to provide space for the chemical reagent bags and the waste
storage bags. When assembled, it is cylindrical in shape and is approximately 13 inches in diameter by 28
inches tall. When equipped with chemicals for a deployment, it weighs about 40 pounds.


What length of deployment can I expect from a 9600?

The deployment length is limited by two factors – battery life (as described above) and reagent life – and,
with a fully charged battery pack the true limiting factor is usually reagent life. For a study involving a 1
hour sample interval, the reagents will last approximately 35 days. For longer sample intervals, the
increase in reagent life is linearly proportional; for example, the reagents will last approximately 70 days
with a 2 hour sample interval.


How long can I expect my cadmium column to last?

Our experience is that some degradation of the column will be observed after approximately 1000 samples
– equivalent to about 36 days with a 1 hour sample interval. However, the loss of reducing capacity will
be dependent on the overall characteristics of the water at a particular site and therefore it is possible that
the column may function acceptably for longer periods of time. Unacceptably high back-pressure is the
most common problem that develops as the cadmium column degrades or ages. Only by gaining
experience with your particular applications will you be able to estimate the longevity of your cadmium
column.


Can I regenerate my cadmium column by following the activation procedure outlined in the manual?

Our experience is that cadmium used in environmental water monitoring under goes changes that will not
allow for regeneration. Therefore, YSI strongly recommends that the cadmium column be REPLACED
after function is compromised.


What depth of water is required for deploying the 9600?

Ideally, the 9600 will be deployed in an “upright” position and under these conditions approximately 3 feet
of water is required for the top-mounted inlet filter to be submersed at all times. However, the 9600 can be
deployed on its side if necessary with the required depth under these conditions being reduced to
approximately 18 inches. Note that the entire monitor should be immersed – not just the inlet filter – so
that all reagents are maintained at a constant environmental temperature.


How deep can the 9600 be deployed?

The 9600 will function properly at depths up to 200 feet of water.


What power sources can be used with the 9600?

The 9600 can be powered in three basic ways:

• An internal battery pack that contains 14 alkaline D cells with an output voltage of approximately 10.5

volts. One of these packs is supplied with each nitrate monitor and replacements are available from
YSI as Model Number 9611.
