Replacing Elastic

When replacing elastic, use the same settings

as for “Mending a Tear.”

1. Fit elastic for desired snugness at waistline,

allowing one inch for joining. Lap the ends

and join with zig-zag stitching.

2. Divide elastic band and garment waistline

into quarters. Lap elastic over fabric and pin

the two together at these intervals. Place

pins at right angles to stitching line.

3. Take a few stitches to anchor elastic to

fabric, then hold the elastic taut as you stitch

so that it will remain stretchable after stitch

ing is completed.

Bar Tacks

Bar tacks, to repair lingerie and attach belt
loops, are made with the zig-zag stitch at a

closed stitch length.
