The current ATM environment is still one that is largely driven in a Diebold® or
NCR® emulation environment that uses traditional “states and screens” –
command sets. The host processor sends “states and screens” to the ATM and
which the ATM uses to build transaction requests and display content to its
user. With that in mind, we define a “Windows driven” ATM as one which: runs
on the Microsoft® Windows® 2000 or XP operating system platform;
communicates using the TCP/IP communications protocol, or a combination of
TCP/IP and another protocol such as Bisync when used in conjunction with a
legacy transaction processing emulation such as 912; takes advantage of Web
technologies, including an industry standard browser (Internet Explorer) and
HTML Web page and development tools which, used together, accurately
represent as well as enhance the current states and screens methodology; is
powered by an underlying ATM software application such as Prism that builds
a new, content-rich HTML-based graphical user interface.

Working together, these characteristics enable new types of enhanced services
that lower cost, increase brand reach, extend online banking capabilities and
grow new revenue streams. It is important to keep in mind, however, that while
Web-enabled ATMs deploy Web technologies, they are neither designed nor

intended for use as a Web surfing device.

Windows based ATMs are the new generation of ATMs that are broadly dis-
tinct from their predecessors in the technology they use and the business ben-
efits they can deliver. Existing ATMs operate in closed, proprietary system, and
most of them run OS/2, an operating system that will find waning support, both
from IBM, its developer, as well as from ATM manufacturers.

In an increasingly competitive retail banking market, OS/2 based ATMs no longer
meet the changing competitive and regulatory requirements that challenge today’s
financial institutions. Windows based ATMs promise to dramatically alter the
role of ATMs in the delivery of banking products and services, and ultimately in
the relationship between financial institutions and their ATM customers.

Prism allows the FI to convert 912 screens into HTML format obviating
any additional resource burden or vendors’ Professional Services in-
tervention.

·

Prism is multi-vendor capable.
