Cold Starting

(Perkins Engines Only)

Use the Thermo Start cold starting aid when the tempera-
ture is below 32

o

F (0

o

C), but not below 10

o

F (-12

o

C) with

10W30 oil in the engine's crankcase. Cold starting aids
such as block heaters are recommended when tempera-
tures are below 10° F (-12° C).

(Temperature ranges will

vary when using different oil weights. Consult the engine
manufacturer's manual for other variables).

At temperatures below 10° F (-12° C), operate the engine
at moderate speeds for 5 minutes before full loads are
applied.

1.

Using hand holds, enter the cab and adjust the
operator’s seat for comfortable operation.

Warning

DO NOT start the engine unless you are in the seat
with the seat belt fastened around you. Serious
injury or death could result if the belt is not securely
fastened.

2.

Adjust mirrors and fasten seat belt.

3.

Check that the emergency brake switch is engaged.

4.

Place the travel select lever in (N) Neutral.

5.

Turn and hold the ignition switch to the THERMO
START position for 15 to 20 seconds. The time of
activation is critical!

6.

Depress the accelerator pedal completely

7.

Turn the ignition switch to the START position to
engage the starter motor. As the engine starts,
release the ignition key to the RUN position. Re-
lease the accelerator pedal to give a smooth idle
speed.

8.

If engine does not start in 15 seconds, return the
ignition key to the THERMO START position for an
additional 10 seconds and then engage the starter
motor again.

Warning

This diesel engine uses a Thermo Start system for
cold weather starting. DO NOT use ether or any high
energy fuels to assist starting. An explosion may
cause serious injury or engine damage.
