8. Control Plane Subsystem

The Control Plane Subsystem includes all the devices and its interconnection system
for the control of the devices on the blade. The main device for the control domain on
the blade is the LMP, which communicates with appliance’s main control unit sitting in a
different slot, outside of the blade, as well as the components on the blade. Shown in
Figure 8-1 is the Control Plane Subsystem block diagram, where the P2041 LMP takes
a central role. The control plane interface includes all the control related traffic
interconnection among the entities on the blade. Depending on the characteristics of
the entities, the interface is provided in the form of either Ethernet or PCI express
(PCIe) or local bus.

The Ethernet interface is mainly used for NIC operations among Ethernet capable
entities such as the NPUs and the LMP. Single entities can have both interfaces to be
used for different purposes.
The entities with Ethernet interconnection include the base switch, the LMP, two
CN6880s, the IPMC, two faceplate Ethernet ports and the backplane Base Interface
which will connect to the chassis main control hub. Single BCM53115M, a 7 port
Ethernet switch, is responsible for control plane Ethernet switching.
10/100/1000BASE-T interface type is supported from the switch.
The entities with PCI express interconnection include the LMP, two CN6880s, and the
BCM56842 switch. Since the LMP functions as a master for all the PCIe devices, all the
connections from the other PCIe clients go to the LMP.
