Workflow for rebalancing pool volume usage rates among parity groups

You can use FS to automatically rebalance the pool-VOL usage rate among parity groups for which
pool-VOLs are defined. Rebalancing distributes the loads of pool-VOLs, averages the page usage
ratio across the pool-VOLs, and reduces the seek time of the data drive during data access.

NOTE:

Rebalancing among parity groups may not average the usage rate of the pool-VOLs in

the parity group.

Rebalancing stops if the cache memory is not redundant or the pool usage rate reaches the threshold.

Rebalancing pool volume usage rates among parity groups does not reclaim zero pages.

Complete one of the following to automatically rebalance the pool-VOL usage rate among parity
groups:

Expand the pool capacity (see

“Increasing pool capacity” (page 118)

).

Decrease the pool capacity (see

“Decreasing pool capacity” (page 121)

).

Reclaim zero pages.

Perform tier relocation more than once. Tier relocation is the process of determining the
appropriate storage tier and migrating the pages to the appropriate tier.

Configure a pool-VOL from multiple parity groups, which causes FS to assume that the parity
group is a pool-VOL and to rebalance the pool usage rate among the parity groups.

To stop the automatic rebalancing of the usage level of parity groups, contact HP Technical Support.

For more information about releasing pages, tier relocation, configuring volumes in a parity group,
and creating LDEVs and assigning pool-VOLs to parity groups and the effects on the pool usage
rate, see the HP XP7 Provisioning for Open Systems User Guide.
