Appendix D. Working with Lenovo Patch Utility
The Lenovo Patch Utility program is an application that searches for, downloads, and installs a patch from
the Lenovo server when a WER (Windows Error Reporting) event occurs.
When a WER event occurs, a private callback is invoked. During the callback process, the WER event
details are gathered to start Lenovo Patch Utility, which uses the WER event details to search for a patch
on the Lenovo server. If a patch is found, Lenovo Patch Utility will download and install the patch per
the user’s confirmation.
Installation
Lenovo Patch Utility is bundled with individual ThinkVantage Technology programs such as the Rescue and
Recovery program, and deployed to the Lenovo common folder as shared assemblies. Because Lenovo
Patch Utility is not invoked by the user manually, it does not require a shortcut oin the Start menu or Device
Stage during installation.
The Lenovo Patch Utility installation folder path is %LenovoCommonFolder%\LPU, for example C:\Program
Files\Common\Lenovo\LPU\ or C:\Program Files (x86)\Common\Lenovo\LPU\.
Because Lenovo Patch Utility is bundled with ThinkVantage Technology programs as a shared merge
module, when a ThinkVantage Technology program is uninstalled and no other ThinkVantage Technology
program is bundled with Lenovo Patch Utility, it will be uninstalled .
Registry settings
Lenovo Patch Utility creates the registry key HKLM\Software\Lenovo\LPU\ during installation. The following
is a list of Lenovo Patch Utility registry settings.

Mode REG_SZ ACTIVE or TEST.
In TEST mode, Lenovo Patch Utility can search for, download and install
test patches. In ACTIVE mode, Lenovo Patch Utility will ignore test
patches.
The default value is ACTIVE.
InstallDir REG_SZ The full path of the Lenovo Patch Utility installation folder.
UserAgent REG_SZ The value used to set the user-agent HTTP header when downloading
patches from the Lenovo server.
