This section provides information necessary to perform the initial configuration of the system.
The NAS system is a "headless" system that is managed through the network; it can be operated without a keyboard,
monitor, or mouse. The NAS system is configured and managed using the browser-based Dell™ PowerVault™ NAS Manager,
which can be accessed from a client system on the same network. See " NAS Manager " for more information. For certain
configuration tasks and for troubleshooting, you can connect a keyboard, monitor, and mouse. You can also connect a client
system directly to the NAS system using the serial cable provided with the NAS system.
Configuring Your NAS System for the First Time
You must set the NAS system's basic configuration from another system on the network that has a keyboard, monitor, and
mouse. This system is referred to as the client system. After you set the basic configuration, you can use the NAS Manager
from any system on the network to set passwords, local users, shares, and so on. See " NAS Manager ."
You can configure your system in several ways, depending on whether Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is
installed on your network:
If DHCP is installed on your network, your system automatically configures the network settings. If you are unsure
whether your network uses DHCP, contact your network administrator. See " Configuring Your NAS System
Automatically on a Network (with DHCP) ."
If DHCP is not installed on your network, you can configure your system using the Dell OpenManage™ Kick-Start utility.

You can use a keyboard, monitor, and mouse connected directly to the NAS system. See " Configuring Your System
Using a Keyboard, Monitor, and Mouse ."
You can use a client system directly connected to the NAS system through a serial cable. See " Configuring Your
System Using a Serial Connection ."
Configuring Your NAS System Automatically on a Network (with
DHCP)
1. Connect one end of the power cable to the NAS system and the other end to a power source.
2. Connect one end of an Ethernet cable into one of the two 10/100/1000 NIC connectors (see Figure 1-1 ) on the back of
your NAS system.

NOTE: There are three RJ-45 NIC connectors on the back panel of your system. However, only the two NIC
connectors located in the center of the system's back panel can be used for NAS system network connections.
