Setting up for sidestream CO

2

monitoring requires these major steps:

1.

Connect the watertrap.

2.

Set up the CO

2

channel and alarm limits.

3.

Connect to a non-intubated patient.

OR

4.

Connect to an intubated patient.

Connect the water trap

1.

Firmly insert the sidestream CO

2

watertrap adapter into the sidestream CO

2

connector on the Propaq left side panel.

Set up the CO

2

channel and alarm limits

1.

Follow the steps described on page 62.

WARNING If the sidestream CO

2

option is connected to a ventilatory circuit, be

sure to adjust appropriate ventilator or anesthesia system settings to compensate
for the sampling flow volume (90 or 175 ml/min) that is aspirated from the
ventilatory circuit by the sidestream CO

2

option.

WARNING Do not use sidestream CO

2

if flammable anesthetic gases are in

use.

WARNING Always use accessories according to the standards of your facility
and according to the manufacturer's directions for use.

Note

Breath rates greater than 50 breaths/minute may reduce the reported ETCO

2

values. Select the 175 ml/min flow rate to minimize errors at higher breath rates.
The 175 ml/min flow rate is recommended for intubated adult patients. When
monitoring a small child with a rapid respiratory rate, mainstream CO

2

can provide

a more accurate representation of the expired CO

2

waveform.
