Section 6

Applying and Removing Power and Booting
Partitions

This section provides the following:

Procedures for powering up and powering down the system, partitions, and guest
operating systems that are hosted on virtual machines

Procedures for booting partitions automatically

Information about power-on self tests

Note: Powering up a partition or guest operating system is also known as booting.

After the system has AC power, you can use the following interfaces:

Remote console interface

Use this interface from a workstation. This interface is preferred for tasks other than
those for which you use Infrastructure Solutions Console, even if you have physical
access to the system.

EXPRESSSCOPE® Monitor interface

You must have physical access to the system to use this interface. However,
remote console interface is still preferred.

Refer to

Section 2 Overview of System Interfaces

for procedures to access each

interface.

6.1. Powering Up or Powering Down Process

The following process is a summary of powering up and powering down a system and its
partitions. For detailed procedures and illustrations, refer to the Hardware Installation
Guide.

1. Depending on your system type, either plug the cell power cables in the premise

wiring or plug the AC power strips into the premise wiring outlets and turn on the
power strip switches. Refer to

Figure 6-1

for an example of the latter.

AC power is applied to each cell of the system, which boots the Service Processors
and makes management firmware and the EXPRESSSCOPE® Monitors operable.

2. Power up each partition using the preferred interface. Refer to the following

subsections for more information.

All cells in the partition receive DC power and the operating system for the partition
boots.
