5.3.4 IP Routing

Overview

The IP Routing table presents the current content of the SpeedTouch™ Routing
Information Base. It contains all routes to all possible destinations and is consulted by
the SpeedTouch™ any time prior to sending or forwarding any packets.

Similar to the IP address table, a number of IP Routes are pre-configured. Other
routes are either added via adding an IP address manually, or via the address
negotiation of a Packet Service connection session, e.g. for

Routed PPPoA

's or

Routed PPPoE

's IPCP, via the DHCP client, e.g. for Routed Ethernet (MER), via pre-

configuration, for example for Routed IPoA, or by the Routing Information Protocol.

Labelled routing

The SpeedTouch™ IP Routing mechanism is based on the labelled routing feature; an
extension of the preceding source-routing capability. With packet-classified routing,
packets can be validated against a set of user-defined rules and, if matching,
consequently classified by assigning a label, in order to apply specific routing rules to
it. This way the SpeedTouch™ is capable of forwarding packets matching specific
parameters according specific labelled routes. More information on Packet
classification can be found in this Help's Packet Classification Advanced Features
section.

Interface routes

Interface routes are routes assigned to one of the SpeedTouch™ interfaces rather
than route to a fixed IP address. This allows configuration of routes for destinations,
for which at time of configuration the gateway IP address is not yet known, or the
local peer interface is not assigned with an IP address, e.g. in case of Routed PPPoA
or Routed PPPoE with IPCP subnet masking. Interface routes are indicated in the IP
Routing table with an asterisk.
Only in special circumstances routes should be manually added/configured or deleted
to/in or from the Forwarding Information Base.
