Instructions for use

You should know

Activities at height carry a serious risk of head injuries from falling objects
and impacts with stationary objects. Wearing a helmet can signifi cantly
reduce these risks, but cannot entirely eliminate them. In extreme impacts
beyond the scope of the test standards, the helmet plays its role by
absorbing the maximum amount of energy possible, deforming sometimes
to the breaking-point.

Limitations on use

Helmet for work at height and rescue.
The chinstrap has a strength of 50 daN (Requirement of the EN 12 492
standard) to help keep the helmet on the head in case of a fall (impact,
snagging).

Preparation (diagram 1)

1A. Headband height: two adjustment positions.
1B. Chinstrap height: two adjustment positions.
1C. Adjust the chinstrap forward or backward by positioning the buckles
as desired.
1D. Use the standard slots (6) to attach hearing and vision protection.
1E. Use the clips (7) to attach a headlamp.
Use only the smooth areas (8) for stickers and other markings.
WARNING: Stickers, markers, paints, etc. may contain ingredients that can
damage the helmet and reduce its protective properties.

Adjustments (diagram 2)

Turn the headband adjustment wheel (3) to adjust the helmet. Fasten the
chinstrap and adjust the fi t using the buckle / adjuster (5).

Precautions

Do not expose helmet to extreme heat (e.g. left in a vehicle parked in the
sun).
Certain chemical products - especially solvents - will damage the helmet
and reduce its protective properties. Keep the helmet away from contact
with chemicals.

Modifi cations

The VERTEX helmets can be equipped with a permanently-mounted
headlamp (e.g. PETZL E63 FIXO DUO). This modifi cation voids the electrical
insulation rating of the helmet.
The mounting instructions for this accessory must be followed precisely.
Any other modifi cation is prohibitited due to the risk of reducing the
helmet’s protective properties.

DUO LED 14

Waterproof with dual light source: focusable halogen bulb and a regulated
14 LED module. The DUO headlamp conforms to the requirements of the
89/336/CEE directive on electromagnetic compatability.

Switching on, switching off, selecting and focusing

Move the switch up to select the powerful halogen beam - high energy
consumption (2).
Move the switch down to select the LEDs - low energy consumption (3).
The zoom knob allows you to adjust the halogen beam in relation to the
desired use: the lower position gives a narrow spotlight, and the upper
position gives a wider beam (4).
The DUO LED 14 allows you to optimize the power and duration of the
lighting according to your needs.
Simultaneous use of both light sources is not possible.

14 LED Module

The 14 LED module is electronically regulated, maintaining a constant
lighting level. When the batteries are nearly spent, the 14 LED module
switches automatically to Reserve Power Mode, providing low-level
proximity lighting.
In addition, this 14 LED light source offers three different lighting levels.
1. OPTIMUM: best balance between power and light duration.
2. MAXIMUM: maximum power.
3. ECONOMY: long light duration.
You choose the lighting level best suited to your activity.
Move the switch down (on). The light always starts at the OPTIMUM level.
To select the next lighting level (MAXIMUM), turn the switch off, then
immediately back on. Consecutive off-on movements of the switch will
cycle the light through levels 2 and 3, then back to level 1 again. If the
movement of the switch is not quick enough, the lamp will light up at level 1
(OPTIMUM).
When the batteries are nearly spent, the 14 LED module switches
automatically to Reserve Power Mode, providing low-level proximity
lighting.

Warning

The DUO LED 14 may interfere with the functioning of an avalanche beacon.
This can happen only when the 14 LED module is turned on, and the beacon
is in receive (search) mode. In case of interference (indicated by static noise
from the beacon), move the beacon away from the lamp until the noise
stops, or switch off the 14 LED module and switch on the halogen bulb.

Mapping / navigation

WARNING: the electronics in the 14 LED module can interfere with the
operation of a compass.

The locking system

Remember to lock the switch during transportation and storage by pressing
the red button (1A). To unlock the switch, press on the opposite end of
the red button (1B). If your headlamp is left switched on in a pack (or
other closed space), the heat emitted by the halogen bulb can damage the
refl ector.

Energy

The E65100 2 DUO rechargeable battery (NiMH 2700 mAH) is
recommended for use with the SPELIOS. AA/LR6 batteries give a very
limited light duration when the 14 LED module is set to maximum. You may
also use AA/LR6 rechargeable batteries.
With the 14 LED module, a typical light duration given by the DUO
rechargeable battery is around 8 hours when multiple modes are used,
for example: 2 hours on maximum, 4 hours on optimum and 2 hours on
economy.
Cold temperatures signifi cantly reduce battery life. In cold environments or
when the batteries are low, the LEDs will give better light than the halogen
bulb.

Changing the rechargeable battery

Open the rear box by releasing the 2 clips (5).
- Attention: never dismantle the gasket ring inside the cover. Take care to
keep it in place (clean with water and a cotton bud). Lubricate the ring with a
silicone based grease. If changing batteries in a damp environment, dry the
inside of the box after use.
Lengthy storage: remove batteries and leave box open.

DUO BATTERY E65100 2

Capacity: 2 700 mAh. The battery consists of 4 NiMH cells.
To be used only with the Petzl DUO CHARGER.
- The battery must be charged before fi rst use.
- Do not hesitate to recharge a battery that is partially discharged or has
been in storage for more than two weeks.
It is not necessary to fully drain the battery before recharging.
- Self discharging: a charged battery stored under good conditions at 20 °C
loses about 15 % of its charge after 3 days, then 1 % per day thereafter.
Note that this rate of discharge is greater in higher temperatures.
- Battery can be recharged 500 times.
- Always use the battery in temperatures above -20 °C and below +60 °C.
- Do not place the battery in a fi re or dismantle it. An explosion or a release
of toxic materials may result.
- Do not short circuit the battery. It may cause burns.

WARNING

Completely drained Ni-MH rechargeable batteries may not perform
correctly or may even leak out gases and toxic chemicals.
To protect your ACCU DUO:
- Turn off the headlamp after each use and recharge the batteries
systematically.
- Switch to the economy LED mode when the lightís brightness decreases
signifi cantly and recharge the ACCU DUO as soon as possible.
A completely drained ACCU DUO is detected by the charger as an error:
the charger will not work (the indicator light will be off). If this occurs, we
recommend the following:
1- Let the ACCU DUO charge for 24 hours.
2- If it does not charge (if the indicator light is still off), force the device to
charge by unplugging it and then plugging it back in while the ACCU DUO is
on the charger base.
3- If the battery still does not charge (the indicator light remains off),
replace your ACCU DUO.

Storage

To extend the life of your battery, store it in a clean, dry place between
-20 °C and +35 °C.

DUO CHARGER

- Do not recharge alkaline or saline batteries due to a risk of explosion.
Charging other types of rechargeable batteries may result in personal injury
and/or damage to batteries and charger.
- Batteries should always be charged at a temperature between 10 °C and
40 °C.
- Do not expose to rain or snow. Shock hazard may result.
- Do not operate the charger if it has been subjected to a signifi cant impact
or fall.
- If the charger is damaged (the power cable for example), do not
disassemble. It must only be repaired in Petzl workshops as special tools
are required.
- To reduce the risk of damage to the plug, pull the plug and not the cable
when you are disconnecting the charger.
- Do not use with an extension cord.
- To reduce the risk of an electric shock, unplug the charger from the wall
socket before attempting any maintenance or cleaning.

Mains charger E65200 2

A green light is lit when the battery is charging.
Time for complete recharge: 3 h 30.
The green light fl ashes when charging is complete.
You should leave the battery connected to the wall charger so it is always
ready for use.
This 100-240 V~, 50/60 Hz charger can be used world-wide with an
appropriate adaptor plug (not supplied). It works with DUO rechargeable
batteries E65100 (1400 mAh) and E65100 2 (2 700 mAh).

Changing a bulb or LED module

Open the case using the left hand to unscrew the bezel (6) and remove it
completely. If the bezel is jammed, try a penetrating lubricant or heat the
bezel with a hair dryer.
Halogen bulb: unscrew the old bulb and screw the new one in tightly.
LED module: pull the unit straight out (it’s OK to touch the LEDs). Install
the new unit.
To close the head piece:
- Grease the threads with a silicone based lubricant
- Position the refl ector, lens, and bezel correctly over the head piece (7),
- Using your right hand, screw the bezel onto the head piece until the mark
on the bezel is situated between the two marks on the head piece (8 & 9).

In case of malfunction

Verify that the batteries are charged and that their installation is correct with
respect to polarity. If the polarity is simply reversed in the battery case, the
halogen bulb will work but the LEDs will not. In this case, remove and re-
install the batteries according to the polarity indicators shown on the case.
Test the lamp with a replacement bulb. Check for corrosion on the contacts.
In case of corrosion, scrape the contacts lightly without damaging them.
Work the switch several times.
If your lamp still does not work contact Petzl.

Care

Water in the headpiece or battery case can cause a malfunction. Whenever
the lamp has been used or opened under bad conditions (moisture, mud,
dust…), remove the batteries, bulb, and LEDs. Allow the lamp to dry
completely with the headpiece and battery box open. Clean the seals with
water and lubricate with a silicone based lubricant.

Cleaning

Wash the lamp using clean water, with the headpiece and battery box
closed. Use soap for the elastic headband. Do not rub the lamp with an
abrasive product, especially the lens. Do not wash with a high pressure
hose.

Batteries

Use alkaline (preferred) or rechargeable batteries.
ATTENTION DANGER, risk of explosion and burns:
The batteries must be inserted correctly w/respect to polarity by following
the diagram on the battery case.
If one battery is reversed (two + poles or two - poles in contact with each
other), a chemical reaction is produced in minutes that releases explosive
gasses and extremely corrosive liquid.
Indicator: a weak level of light with new batteries indicates that the polarity
of one or more batteries is reversed.
In case of doubt, turn off the lamp immediately and check the polarity.
Protect your eyes in case leakage has already occurred. Cover the battery
case with a rag before opening it to avoid contact with any discharge.
In case of contact with liquid from the batteries, rinse affected area
immediately with clear water and get immediate medical attention.
- Do not mix brands of batteries.
- Do not mix new and used batteries.
- Remove the batteries from the lamp for prolonged storage.
- Do not recharge alkaline batteries.
- Do not short-circuit the batteries as this can cause burns.
- Do not attempt to open or dismantle batteries.
- Do not put used batteries in a fi re.
- Keep batteries out of reach of children.
PRECAUTIONS to avoid damaging your lamp (oxydation of contacts...)
and to limit the risk of leaky batteries:
- do not allow the batteries to become heavily discharged,
- keep water out of the battery case.

Protecting the environment

Lamps, bulbs, and batteries should be recycled and not thrown in the
regular trash. Dispose of these items by recycling them in accordance with
applicable local regulations. By doing so you play a part in protecting the
environment and public health.
