CYLINDER FILTER

Fig. 7

This filter

Ê

is made of cotton, which is different from a

standard paper filter, it MUST be oiled.

1. Spray the filter with air filter cleaning solution. Allow filter

to soak in solution for 15 minutes.

CAUTION:

Never use detergents, high pres-

sure water, or gasoline to clean this filter.

2. Rinse the filter with warm water. Let the water run from

clean side to the dirty side.

3. Allow filter to dry completely. It is best to allow the filter to

dry naturally. Do not use heat, this may shrink the cotton.

4. USE ONLY AIR FILTER OIL, such as the oil included in

the cleaning kit (P/N 5089D), to re-oil the filter.

WARNING

Never use motor oil, transmission fluid, WD40, or
other oils. Failure to follow instructions can cause
fires resulting in death or serious injury. Use only
air filter oil designed specifically for air filters.

5. Pour or spray a small amount on each pleat. Allow the oil

to soak into the filter for 20 minutes. The filter is correctly
oiled when the cotton changes to the color of the oil.

CAUTION:

DO NOT over-oil air filter, it will

interfere with engine performance and may cause
engine damage. If the filter is placed on cardboard
for 10 minutes and leaves a stain, it is over oiled.
Wash/clean and re-oil per above instructions.

6. Re-install air filter.

SPARK PLUG

К

Л

Check the spark plug every season. Replace the spark plug if
upon inspection the electrodes are burned or worn. Ensure the
spark plug is clean. Check the gap with a feeler gage

reset to .76 mm or 0.030 in.

Ë

if necessary.

CLEANING DEBRIS

Fig. 8

Daily or before every use, clean accumulated debris from
engine.

Ê

Keep linkage, springs and controls clean.

Ë

Keep

area around and behind the muffler free of any combustible
debris.

Ì

CAUTION: Do not use water to clean engine parts. Water
could contaminate fuel system. Use a brush or dry cloth.

WARNING

Engine parts should be kept clean to reduce the risk of
overheating and ignition of accumulated debris.

MUFFLER

WARNING

Replacement parts for the muffler must be the same and
installed in the same position as the original parts, otherwise
fire can occur.
If muffler is equipped with spark arrester screen, remove
screen for inspection. Replace screen if damaged or plugged
with debris.

FUEL SYSTEM / IN-LINE FUEL FILTER

WARNING

Replacement parts for fuel system (caps, hoses, tanks, filters,
etc.) must be the same as the original parts otherwise fire can
occur.
Fuel Filter − Drain fuel tank or close fuel shut-off valve before
replacing fuel filter, otherwise fuel can leak out, creating a
potential hazard.

AIR COOLING SYSTEM Fig. 9

It is recommended to clean the air cooling system with blower
housing removed every 100 hours. Clean areas shown.

Ê

STORAGE

Engines stored over 30 days need to be protected or drained of
fuel to prevent gum from forming in fuel system or on essential
carburetor parts.
For engine protection, we recommend use of Briggs & Stratton
Fuel Stabilizer available from an Authorized Briggs & Stratton
Service Dealer. Mix stabilizer with fuel in fuel tank or storage
container. Run engine for a short time to circulate stabilizer
through carburetor. Engine and fuel can be stored up to 24
months.
Note: If stabilizer is not used or if engine is operating on
gasoline containing alcohol, e.g. gasohol, remove all fuel from
tank and run engine until it stops from lack of fuel.

1. Change oil.
2. Remove spark plug and pour about 30 ml (1 oz) of

engine oil into cylinder. Replace spark plug and crank
slowly to distribute oil.

3. Clean grass and chaff from cylinder and cylinder head

fins, under finger guard and behind muffler.

4. Store in a clean and dry area, but NOT near a stove,

furnace or water heater which uses a pilot light or any
device that can create a spark.
