Exif (Exchangeable Image File Format): A full-color still-image file format

for digital still cameras approved by the Japan Electronics and

Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA). Exif is

compatible with JPEG and TIFF and can be handled by most image

processing software applications for PCs.

Exposure bias: A process of adjustment or correction that allows the

photographer to deliberately make the photographed image darker

or lighter than the exposure automatically determined by the

camera.

Formatting: The process of configuring the content of a hard disk drive or

SD card so that it can be used to record data (also known as

initializing).

JPEG: A file format used for compressing and saving color images. The

compression ratio can be selected, but the higher the compression

ratio, the poorer the quality of the expanded image. Widely used on

the Internet and by painting applications for PCs.

MPEG: A file format for compressing video files that allows files containing

digital video and audio to be transferred efficiently.

MPEG-4 AVC/H.264: A video encoding system established by the ITU

(International Telecommunication Union) and the ISO (International

Organization for Standardization).

PictBridge: A communications standard for printing images via a direct

printer connection.

This allows devices to print by connecting directly to a PictBridge-

compatible printer via a USB cable.

In addition to allowing settings such as the number of prints to be

specified on a digital camera, PictBridge can be used for a range of

functions.

Red-eye effect: An effect in which the pupils of people’s eyes appear

bright red in shots taken in dark situations using a flash. The effect

is caused by the light of the flash reflecting off the inside of the eye.

White balance: A function that adjusts the color balance according to the

color of the ambient light around the subject so that white subjects

appear white in the photographed image.

x.v.Color: Complies with the “xvYCC” international standard that stipulates

an extended-gamut color space for video. x.v.Color provides a

broader range of colors than existing color spaces.
