Refer to previous sections to rebuild the top portion (upper
housing assembly) of the gearbox.

Tail Shaft Assembly

See Figure 6-17: “Lower Housing Assembly” on page 6-37.

Notes: If only the tail shaft assembly is removed, set the gearshift
mechanism to engage the sliding gear (PUMP position). The sliding
gear assembly and the shift cylinder assembly need not be removed.

If the tail shaft or the sliding gear shaft require service, it is not
necessary to remove the gearbox from the apparatus.

Removal

1. Remove the four screws securing the rear bearing cap to the

gearbox housing.

2. Slide (pull back) the tail shaft assembly from the gearbox

housing. See Figure 6-17: “Lower Housing Assembly” on
page 6-37.

Be careful not to drop the needle bearing into the housing as
the shaft assembly is being removed.

3. Remove the outer retaining ring from the tail shaft, then re-

move the outer tail shaft bearing.

4. Remove the inner retaining rings (3) and inner bearing.

5. Slide the tail shaft from the rear bearing cap.

6. Remove (drive out) the oil seal from the rear bearing cap.

Removing the seal renders it defective - Order Hale
p/n: 296-2540-00-0.

Installation Notes

See Figure 6-17: “Lower Housing Assembly” on page 6-37.

To install, follow the preceding steps in the reverse order, paying
attention to the following:

Review preceding section “Before You Begin...,” beginning on
page 6-1.
