Automatic Identification System (AIS)
AIS provides a means of broadcasting
digitally navigation information
including boat position/speed/heading/
dimension/name/destination/ROT, aids
to navigation, base station reports,
and more. Created by the IMO and
sanctioned by the U.S. Coast Guard for
boat monitoring and collision avoidance.
It is used by boat traffic monitoring and
control locations throughout the world to
improve situational awareness and help
prevent collisions at sea.

Automatic Radar Plotting Aid (ARPA)
The functionality entailing the detection
of moving targets and calculating their
speed and course. ARPA is a collision
avoidance system.

Baud Rate
See Port Speed.

Checksum
An NMEA checksum is calculated as
the XOR of bytes between (but not
including) the dollar sign and asterisk.
This checksum is then compared with
the checksum from the sentence. If the
checksums do not match, the sentence
is typically discarded.

COM Port
The interface through which Workboat
Navigator and your computer can
communicate with peripherals.

Data Manager
The Data Manager (System Menu |
Data Manager
) is a utility designed to
provide an overview of all data objects,
including user-created navigation
objects, charts, routes, Chart Permits,
etc. Data properties, such as item name
and location can be reviewed and edited
from this utility.

Data Sentence
The unit of information sent between
peripherals and Visual Series,
conforming to the NMEA 0183
specification.

Datum Setting
Jeppesen Workboat Navigator assumes
that the GPS will output position data
using the WGS84 Datum. The setting is
configured in the GPS.

DB9
Most computers use a serial 9 pin wiring
connector referred to as DB9. DB9
comes in two types, male and female.
The 9-pin port on a computer is always
a male connector. The pins on the male
connector are numbered from wide side
up, the top left to right, then the bottom
left to right 1 through 9. The pins on the
female connector are numbered from
wide side up, from top right to left, then
bottom right to left 1 through 9.

Depth Sounder
See Sounder.

Deviation
Changes in the magnetic field due to
the ferrous composition of surrounding
objects affecting the measured direction
of magnetic North. Deviation is
measured as the angular difference in
direction between the actual magnetic
heading and the compass heading.

Electronic Navigation Chart (ENC)
An electronic data file containing
information that could be used to display
a chart.

eToken License File
A digital file that contains all current
Chart Permits and Unlock Codes for the
NavData regions you have purchased.
This file verifies to the NavData installer
which charts and supplemental data to
decrypt and load onto your system.
