COMMUNICATING WITH THE MCE 300

COMMUNICATION PORTS

The GASBOY MCE 300 has two asynchronous communication ports for connecting RS232
devices. The connections should be made by a direct cable. Cable length is limited to 50 feet.
Each port has a selectable baud rate of 300, 600, 1200, 2400, 4800, or 9600 baud. (See Section
2 for specific installation connections).

Baud Rate Selection

K1 Main Port
NOTE: Drawing is shown jumpered at 300 baud.

The MAIN port is used for connection of a data terminal or CRT. All commands to the MCE 300
are processed through this port.

The AUX port is used for connection of an optional printer(s). In cases where a CRT is used in the
MAIN port, it may be desired to connect a printer to this port for hard-copy printouts. This port is
also used to output the information that is used for printing labels. In cases where both of these
printers are required, a GASBOY T-Bar box and the appropriate cables (see Section 2) should be
used to allow for switching between the two printers.

DATA TERMINAL/PRINTER(S)

The type of device(s) connected to the MCE 300 for operation and printing can vary according to
your application and requirements. The following basic guidelines should be used when selecting
a unit(s):

Data Terminal - This is used for operation of the system and is connected to the MAIN port.
The device must be capable of transmitting and receiving full duplex, ASCII, asynchronous
data via an Electric Industry Association (E.I.A.) standard RS232 communication protocol.
This device should be U.L. Listed and should not be used over a hazardous location. This
device should also be capable of providing a hardcopy printout (not necessary when an
optional hardcopy printer is used). Data terminal devices standardly sold with GASBOY Card
Systems will work in this application (e.g. T.I. 703, 743, 745, Panasonic KXD4910, KXD4911,
KXD4920).

Hardcopy Printer - This is an optional printer used to provide hard-copy printouts. This
device would be connected to the AUX port if used. It should be capable of receiving full
duplex, ASCII, asynchronous data via an E.I.A. standard RS232 communication protocol.
This device should be U.L. listed and should not be used over a hazardous location.
