Using the Failover Manager

Adding a Failover Manager to the management group enables the SAN to have automated failover
using a manager installed on network hardware other than the storage systems in the HP StoreVirtual
Storage. Once installed and configured on network hardware, the Failover Manager is added to
a management group where it serves solely as a quorum tie-breaking manager.

IMPORTANT:

Installing the Failover Manager on network hardware other than the storage systems

in the SAN ensures that it is available for failover and quorum operations if a storage system in
the SAN becomes unavailable.

Requirements

A static IP address, or a reserved IP address if using DHCP.

A server and volume on which to install the Failover Manager. However, it must be a server
and volume that are not on the HP StoreVirtual Storage network.

Only one Failover Manager per management group.

The Failover Manager must not be inside a virtual Windows machine with VMware Server
running.

Planning the virtual network configuration

Before you install the Failover Manager on the network, plan the virtual network configuration:

Design and configure the virtual switches and network adapters.

Identify the Windows server or vCenter server on which to install Failover Manager files, and
a designated host name and IP address.

Create an iSCSI network for the virtual machine. The Failover Manager should be on the iSCSI
network. If you do not have an existing virtual machine network configured on the iSCSI
network/vswitch, create a new virtual machine network for the Failover Manager.

Using the Failover Manager on Microsoft Hyper-V Server

Install the Failover Manager on a server running Windows Server 2008 or 2012 from the HP
StoreVirtual VSA and Failover Manager DVD, or from the DVD .iso image downloaded from the
following website:
