Table 52 Requirements for changing volume characteristics

Requirements for Changing

Item

Must be from 1 to 127 characters.

Description

The server must have already been created in the management group.

Server

Migrating a volume to a different cluster requires the target cluster to:

Cluster

Reside in the same management group

Have sufficient storage systems and unallocated space for the size and data protection
level of the volume being moved

The volume resides on both clusters until all of the data is moved to the new cluster. This
causes a restripe of the data on both clusters. For example, you create a new cluster in the
management group to expand the storage capacity in the management group. You want to
migrate an existing volume to the new cluster as part of the capacity management.

NOTE:

The volume remains fault-tolerant while being moved.

The rate of the data migration and the resulting impact on performance can be controlled
by the Local Bandwidth Priority setting for the management group. See

“Editing a management

group” (page 113)

for information about local bandwidth priority settings.

The cluster must have sufficient storage systems and unallocated space to support the new
data protection level. For example, you just added more storage to a cluster and have more

Data protection level

capacity. You decide to change the data protection level for a volume from Network RAID-0
to Network RAID-10 to ensure you have redundancy for your data.

Before changing the size of a volume, refer to

“Changing the volume size on the server”

(page 153)

To increase the size of the volume:

Size

If you have enough free space in the cluster, simply enter the new size.

If you do not have enough free space in the cluster, delete volumes and/or snapshots,
or add a storage system to the cluster.

To decrease the size of the volume requires additional planning and steps:

To avoid data loss, you must shrink the file system on the volume before shrinking the
volume in the CMC, if the volume has been or is mounted by any operating system.

To avoid data loss, do not decrease the size of the volume below the size needed for
data currently stored on the volume.

Changing the Adaptive Optimization setting of a volume does not impact data integrity for
that volume.

Adaptive Optimization

If you change the Adaptive Optimization setting of a volume from Permitted to Not Permitted,
and that volume is hosted on multiple storage tiers, the data on that volume will not
immediately move to the slower tier. However, it will be the first data to be moved to the
slower tier of storage as space is needed to service other volumes’ data on the faster tier.

CAUTION:

HP recommends caution when decreasing a volume’s size. If you shrink the volume

in the CMC before shrinking it from the server file system, data will be corrupted or lost.
