Megabyte

A megabyte is approximately one
million bytes ( 1024 X 1024 bytes ). A
typical hard drive stores around 40 GB
(gigabytes). A gigabyte is equivalent to
a billion bytes or 1024 X 1024 X 1024
bytes.

Metronome

A metronome is a device or system that
produces a regulated pulse, usually
used to keep a beat steady in musical
compositions.

MIDI

MIDI is an acronym for Musical
Instrument Digital Interface. It is
the way that physical and virtual
synthesizers communicate with each
other. For example, when you press
middle C on your musical keyboard, it
sends a message says "Play Middle C". It
is a small and compact series of codes.

MP3

MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3, more
commonly referred to as MP3, is a
popular digital audio encoding, lossy
compression format, and algorithm,
designed to greatly reduce the amount
of data required to represent audio, yet
still sound like a faithful reproduction of
the original uncompressed audio to most

the rest of the sound is raised in volume
by the same percentage.

Overdub

Overdubbing (the process of making an
overdub, or overdubs) is a technique
used by recording studios to add a
supplementary recorded sound to a
previously recorded performance.

Pan

The balance or ratio between the left and
right speakers (channels).

Peaks

A visual display of a sound's amplitude
over time. (Mixcraft displays one peak
per millisecond.)
