DMX512 REFERENCE GUIDE

Phase Balancing

Repeater Boxes and SixPack chassis should be phase balanced. Phase balancing for a Repeater Box occurs when all
the luminaires in a system are equally distributed across the X, Y, and Z input phases. For a SixPack chassis, phase
balancing occurs when the APS6 and/or C3 modules are equally distributed across the three input phases of the unit.
A balanced system draws approximately equal currents from each phase. An unbalanced system may draw much
more current from one phase than from the other two phases.

Note: Phase balancing is especially important when a generator is the power source for the system. However, it is
always good to balance the system even when the power source is a normal house service.

Phase balancing is accomplished at the Repeater Box outputs. There are nine luminaire connections on the Repeater
Box, with three of them connected to each phase. To balance the system, ensure that repeater/lamp cable
connections are made so that each phase has the same number of luminaires or Smart Repeater units connected.
