Warning

Remove the sound level
meter batteries when it is to
be powered by the CEL-238A,
CEL-338, or CEL-438.

The CEL digital recorder/analyser may be
used to power thesound level meter to
conserve battery life when measure-
ments are made over a long term.

The following facilities are available for
data reduction and recording.

¤

Production of sound or vibration
records in either graphical or alpha-
numeric formats from CEL sound
level meter data.

¤

Production of records in graphical
format showing sound or vibration
levels versus frequency or time.

¤

Production of averaged or maximum
level records in either graphical or
alphanumeric format.

¤

Control of filter switching in CEL
filter sets to produce spectrograms
auto- matically.

¤

Storage of information for later out-
put via an RS 232 Interface.

¤

Storage of measured information,
for
reprocessing, or further processing,
at a later date.

¤

Calculation of statistical distributions
and L

n

percentiles.

For further operational details, refer to
the operator’s handbook for the data/log-
ger to be used.

7.4Use With Tape

Recorders

These sound level meters can be con-
nected to a tape recorder and function as
an accurately calibrated input system.

This enables the measured sound or vi-
bration levels to be recorded for further
calculation, and subsequent frequency
analysis.

When recording, connection with the
tape recorder is accomplished via the
sound level meter auxiliary socket as
shown in Figure 14. The auxiliary sockets
of CEL filter sets have similar pin identi-
ties so that the same connecting cables
can also be used with them.

Use pin 4 to obtain an unfiltered AC sig-
nal. If an external filter set is fitted, pin 4
of the socket on the bottom of the filter
gives filtered AC. Both outputs have a
maximum level of 7.75 V RMS (8.0 V
RMS on CEL-493/3). Refer to Sections
3.5 and 3.6, and Chapter 11 for precise
details of the input and output possibili-
ties.

The “Event in Progress” output from a
CEL-493/3 (or CEL-493/2) can be used to
start and stop recording on Sony TCD
D10 and Sony TCD D10 PRO II DAT
Recorders. A specially converted remote
control handset (SLM-REMCONMOD)
which accepts this output must be used,
together with special connection cables.
A suitable recording arrangement is
shown in Figure 15.

When long term recording is required
with external power for the CEL-493/3
(or /2), a CEL-3732/3 Power Supply and
CEL-6616 Socket Adaptor are also recom-
mended. A suitable recording arrange-
ment is shown in Figure 15.

When replaying into a Type 1 instrument,
insert the recorded signal by means of a
CEL-216 Line Input Adaptor. This screws
into the preamplifier in place of the micro-
phone capsule, and accepts a standard
BNC connector.
