TAPING & JIG INSTRUCTIONS

5/6/98 - Klamping Instructions.cdr

APPLYING VAK TAPE

Included with your Klamping Kit set is a roll of VAK Tape to
be applied in the pattern of your choice. Applying the VAK
Tape is easy and straight forward. The one main point to
remember is to not pull or stretch the tape as it is applied.
This elongates the tape and can be the source of splitting
after it’s put into use.

First decide on the pattern for the particular VAKuum jig.
The last page contains various patterns for the baseplate,
straight edge and right angle Klamp. It also shows several
ways to make gates. See Figures 5 & 6. A gate is used to
close off a section of the VAKuum Klamp so that a smaller
work piece can be held on a larger VAKuum jig. Gates are
particularly useful on the straight edge jig as it can be
sectioned into smaller VAKuum lengths on work pieces
shorter than the straight edge.

If you purchased Acrylic Jigs from Q.V.P., remove the
protective paper from both sides of the jig.

After the pattern has been decided upon, remove about 4 -
5" of the paper backing from the tape. Place the tape on
the jig and continue to lay it in place in the desired pattern.
DO NOT PULL ON THE TAPE AS IT IS BEING APPLIED.
See Figure 1.

If you are applying the tape around the perimeter of the jig,
like the straight edge, use your finger as a guide. Run your
finger against the outside edge while using your thumb to
hold and guide the tape with one hand. With the other
hand hold the tape and slightly compress it as you apply
the tape. The adhesive on the tape is very aggressive, do
not press on the tape as it will not come up after it has been
pressed. If the tape has just fallen in place (no pressure
applied), sometimes it can be lifted and reset if it was
placed incorrectly.

When you completed the loop, make a butt joint. About 5"
from the starting point, cut the tape about 1/8" longer than
the length needed to complete the loop. Arch the 5" length
and butt the ends together. See Figure 2. Then put the 5"
length in place. This makes a tight joint and prevents the
last few inches from being stretched.

REPAIRING A BREAK

The tape can get ripped or if stored incorrectly, a section
can get compressed and not spring back to its full height.
Just apply a length of new tape along side the damaged
area. See Figure 3. The damaged section can also be cut
out and the foam removed. The adhesive does not have to
be removed, just apply the new tape over the old adhesive.

REPLACING THE TAPE

The life of the VAK Tape depends on its usage. For
example, using it to hold a 6" diameter of smooth plastic for
templet routing verses holding a 2' x 2' piece of rough oak
for routing will vary its life greatly. Not only is the oak going
to abrade the tape, the area under vacuum is about 7000
lbs. for the oak and only 380 lbs. for the plastic.

Scrape the foam off using a chisel, keep in mind that the
adhesive will not come off with the chisel. A new layer of
tape can be applied over the old adhesive. If you want to
remove the adhesive, use mineral spirits or turpentine to
soften it and scrape with a chisel.

RECESSING THE VAK TAPE

Sometimes it is necessary to recess the VAK Tape into the
jig. This is done when the work piece needs to stay flat.
Distortion or bowing can occur on large pieces of thin
material. Recessing the tape allows the work piece to hit
against the surface of the jig. Cut a channel the width of
the tape about one half the thickness of the tape. You may
have to experiment with the depth cut to best meet your
needs. Push the VAK Tape into the channel. DO NOT
REMOVE THE PAPER BACKING
. The tape should stay
in place without the use of the adhesive backing. This will
make replacing the tape simple and fast. If the tape does
not stay in place for any reason, remove a quarter inch of
the paper backing in one or two places to secure it in the
channel.
