1 Business Copy Z overview

Business Copy for Mainframe, also known as Business Copy Z (BC Z), uses local mirroring
technology to create and maintain a full copy of a data volume within an HP XP7 Storage (XP7)
system.

You can use BC Z copies as backups, with secondary host applications, for data mining, for testing,
as well as for other uses, while business operations continue without stopping host application
input/output (I/O) to the production volume.

Hardware and software components

A typical configuration consists of an XP7 Storage system, a host connected to the XP7 storage
system, the BC Z software, a primary or source volume (P-VOL), one or more secondary or target
volumes (S-VOLs), and interface tools for operating BC Z.

The following image shows a typical configuration.
