10 Disaster recovery operations

This chapter provides instructions for performing disaster recovery.

In addition to general recovery planning and procedures, detailed instructions are included for
recovery when Continuous Access Journal Z pairs are configured in 3-data-center (3DC)
configurations with Continuous Access Synchronous Z. Recovery when Cnt Ac-J Z pairs are shared
with Business Copy Z pairs is also included.

Overview

Recovery is the reason for using Continuous Access Journal Z and other replication software. With
copies of data at a remote location, you restore lost or damaged information from the backup
copy. With copies in multiple remote locations, you increase the level of data security, with more
complex recovery procedures.

The following is covered in this chapter;

“General recovery procedures” (page 104)

“Recovery for 3 Cnt Ac-J Z/Cnt Ac-S Z data centers and 3 Cnt Ac-J Z data centers” (page 106)

.

This includes information for both 3DC and 2DC configurations.

“Recovery for configurations with Cnt Ac-J Z/Business Copy Z” (page 111)

General recovery procedures

A recovery workflow consists of the following:
1.

“Preparing for recovery ” (page 104)

.

2.

Establish file and database recovery procedures before disaster or failure occurs, as part of
the Cnt Ac-J Z planning process.

See

“Preparing for file and database recovery ” (page 104)

.

3.

After a disaster or failure, switch host operations to the secondary site.

See

“Switching host operations to the secondary site ” (page 105)

.

4.

Recover the primary site, then copy data to it from the secondary site.

See

“Reversing copy direction from secondary to primary sites ” (page 105)

.

5.

Re-establish the pair and host operations at the primary site.

See

“Resuming host operations at the primary site ” (page 106)

.

Preparing for recovery

The major steps for preparing for disaster recovery are:

Identify the data volumes that you want to back up for disaster recovery.

Pair the important volumes using Continuous Access Journal Z.

Establish file and database recovery procedures.

Install and configure software for host failover between the primary and secondary sites.

Preparing for file and database recovery

File recovery procedures are necessary when the primary or secondary system suspends a pair
due to a disaster or failure. When this occurs, the S-VOL may contain in-process data resulting
from an open data set or transactions that could not complete. File recovery procedures in these
circumstances are the same as when a data volume becomes inaccessible due to control unit
failure.
