3 Preparing for XP Continuous Access Operations

This chapter describes the requirements for using XP Continuous Access Synchronous and provides
instructions for installing the XP Continuous Access Synchronous hardware and software, and
preparing the storage systems for XP Continuous Access Synchronous operations. Read this chapter
before you start the operation of XP Continuous Access Synchronous.

System Requirements

XP Continuous Access operations involve the MCUs and RCUs containing the primary and secondary
volumes, the remote copy connections between the MCUs and RCUs, the host(s) at the primary
and remote sites, and the licensed XP Continuous Access software.

XP Continuous Access can coexist with Hitachi TrueCopy™ for Mainframe (all copy modes) in the
same storage system.

The XP Continuous Access system requirements are:

MCU: Storage system with XP Continuous Access installed by using a license code.

For important information about proper configuration for your operational environment, see

“XP Continuous Access Load Balancing and Sidefile Management and Control” (page 173)

.

RCU: Storage system with XP Continuous Access installed by using a license code.

A model other than the XP24000/XP20000 disk array can also be used as an RCU connected
to an XP24000/XP20000 disk array MCU. For assistance with mixed storage system
configurations, contact your HP Technical Support service representative.

The storage systems may have additional installation requirements (for example, system option
modes, DKC-F510I-32FS2, DKC-F515I-MIX2).

Host platforms: The storage system supports XP Continuous Access operations for a variety of
UNIX-based and PC-server platforms, including the Sun Solaris, IBM AIX, HP-UX, Windows
NT, and Windows 2000 platforms. Contact your HP Technical Support representative for the
latest information on storage system platform support for XP Continuous Access.

Remote copy connections − Fibre Channel:

Multimode or single-mode optical fibre cables are required at both the MCU and RCU.

For distances from 0.5 km to 1.5 km (1,640 to 4,920 feet), multimode shortwave Fibre
Channel interface cables with up to two switches are required.

For distances from 10 km to 30 km (6.2 to 18.6 miles), single-mode longwave Fibre
Channel interface cables with up to two switches are required.

For distances greater than 30 km, approved third-party channel extender products and
telecommunications lines are required.

All Fibre Channel remote copy activities between two storage systems (that is, XP Continuous
Access Synchronous and Asynchronous, TrueCopy for Mainframe Synchronous and
Asynchronous) can share the same remote copy connections.
